One morning Maya, who runs Sugarmoon Bakery in Brooklyn, was mid-batch of croissants when her phone buzzed: NYC had updated its cottage food labeling rules, and three lines on her ingredient labels needed rewording by July 1. Bizmoon's summary was two sentences. The action sat in her dashboard with a deadline.

Final RuleMay 11, 2026Federal RegisterDOL

The Department of Labor finalized a rule raising the federal overtime salary threshold to $58,656 annually, effective 90 days from publication.

85%This Quarterlabor classificationcompliance

Salaried employees earning below the new $58,656 annual threshold are now eligible for overtime pay under the FLSA. Employers must either reclassify affected employees, raise their salaries to the threshold, or convert them to hourly. Existing exemptions for executive, administrative, and professional duties still apply above the threshold.
